Job Description:

SSTAR's Project Aware department is seeking an Outreach Worker. The Outreach Worker is responsible for providing HIV/STI testing in the community, conducting outreach among vulnerable populations and providing harm reduction services.


  1. Provide counseling and testing to individuals who are at risk of HIV, HEP C, and STI’s.

  2. Interview clients to determine their level of knowledge, attitudes, and behavior regarding HIV, Hepatitis C, STI’s, and harm reduction.

  3. Collect blood samples from patients and follow universal precautions.

  4. Provide overdose education to clients and distribute naloxone

  5. Conduct outreach in the community setting and build relationships with local venues.

  6. Assess potential barriers to care and work with clients to reduce obstacles resulting from lack of transportation, mental illness, substance use, etc.

  7. Link clients to medical care and MAT treatment.

  8. Develop appropriate client referrals internally and externally to the organization.

  9. Collect data on program activities, enter data timely, and accurately into data systems.

  10. Attend relevant trainings and participate in regional meeting assigned.

  11. Stay informed about current HIV/HCV/STI trends, development, and research


Experience and Skills:


  1. High School graduate with two years of full-time experience in the field of health care, medical care or public health education in a recognized hospital, medical facility, or agency

  2. Bilingual in Spanish preferred

  3. Sensitivity to HIV issues and people with disabilities required

  4. Must be open to working with people from diverse background, cultures and lifestyles in a non-judgmental manner

  5. At least two years continuous sobriety is required for people in recovery from drugs or alcohol
